3 reasons I’m thrilled it’s 2014

Want in on a secret? I’m fascinated by our place in history. What I mean is, how is it that I’m here now and I wasn’t born in 18th century England or in 312 B.C. when the Romans were busy perfecting the aqueduct? Better yet, why wasn’t I born in 2776 when we really will have flying cars?

Alas, I’m here now and I intend to make the most of it. So without further ado, here’s why I’m thrilled it’s 2014:

#3 Accessible toilets

Talk about taking something for granted. How nice is it to have indoor plumbing? Can you imagine using a chamber pot or worse yet, rolling down to the outhouse first thing in the morning? Are you kidding me? No thank you sir! I am, without a doubt, “pro toilet.” Say it with me – Hooray toilets!

By the way, if you’re out and about and you need a clean accessible toilet, Nordstrom is second to none. In my experience, the stalls are wide and always clean. Oh, and the “family restrooms” are unbeatable. Well done, Nordstrom!

#2 Hand controls

Few things beat the thrill of the open road and thanks to my hand controls I can hop into my Ford Flex and … I’m off. Nothing levels the mobility playing field like a V-6! Driving is something I’ll never take for granted.

Incidentally, if you’re in the market for hand controls and you live in metro Phoenix, give Dignified Motors a call. They installed my last set of hand controls and did an amazing job.

And the #1 reason I’m thrilled it’s 2014 …

#1 I’m missing all of the “Polar Vortex” fun!

Ohio snow

If you read my blog regularly, you know that I’m a proud, sturdy son of Ohio. I love it. It’s where I’m from. It’s where I’m comfortable. But this winter in particular, I couldn’t be happier to call the “Valley of the Sun” home.

I talked to my mom the other day (my parents still live in Northwest Ohio) and this was her take on the weather: “It’s getting warmer. It’s supposed to get up to 22 (degrees) today. The sun is shining, but boy it sure is windy.”

Twenty-two degrees means it’s “getting warmer?” HA! I had the AC on in my car today because it was 80 and I’d worked up a sweat putting my chair in the back of the Flex.

I decided long ago that there’s a difference between proving you can do something, handle an Ohio winter for 23 years, and being a glutton for punishment – dealing with Ohio winters for a lifetime – yuck!

I can’t imagine rolling through the Oval at Ohio State this winter. You know, what with Ohio feeling more like Antarctica these days; oy vey! “Ordinary” winters are challenging enough!

So there you have it. My top three reasons I’m thrilled it’s 2014.

I’d like to conclude with a public service announcement: If you’re reading this and you live in the Northeast, Midwest or the South, know this: the best way to avoid winter is to move somewhere, anywhere warm. NOW! Seriously, don’t wait!

Where you go is up to you, but I can personally vouch for Phoenix. It’s awesome! Don’t believe me? Think I secretly work for the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce? Nope. I’m just a guy who loves his city.

Come and see what all the fuss is about. Don’t worry. If you need to know where to stay and/or eat, I know a guy who started an amazing travel and entertainment website for people with disabilities and/or mobility challenges.

Make plans to visit metro Phoenix today and let us help you do it!
