Happy New Year

Secret life of walter mitty

I’d just logged hour five in front of my iMac in the home office, affectionately called the sub due to its gray walls and the fact that when I’m in there with the door shut the rest of the world doesn’t exist. I’d reached the point where, like the sailors in the German classic Das Boot, I needed to surface. I needed out! Like, NOW.

So I sent my last email and went to the movies – alone. It was glorious. Once upon a time my release was going to the gym and clearing my head via the good ole fashioned bench press, but since my two shoulder operations, the gym is out and movies are in!

Sitting in front of the AMC Ahwatukee 24 (featured right here goo.gl/k3tjzJ by the way) the brisk winter air tickled my senses reminding me that yes, it does get cold in Phoenix, I made the decision to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed by and starring Ben Stiller.

Known primarily as a comedian, I wasn’t sure what to expect from his latest effort, but it proved to be an excellent way to spend 114 minutes. Instead of rehashing the movie I will instead, encourage you to see it.

Stiller’s character, Walter, lives life like a lot of us, on autopilot. He spends more time dreaming than doing. As the film unfolds this begins to change. Walter evolves rather naturally it turns out, into a more comfortable version of himself.

Then it hit me – this is a fictional adaptation of a belief I hold dear: the key to a successful life, however you define success, is being comfortable with who we are.

Hence, the more comfortable we become with who we are, life becomes less about why we can’t do something and more about taking chances – channeling our own inner Walter Mitty and actively living instead of being spectators of our own existence.

Personally, I hope to listen to my own Walter Mitty by traveling more in 2014 for business and for fun and by remembering that tomorrow is a gift wanted by all but promised to none. It’s up to us to make today worth remembering.

Wishing you a prosperous 2014 full of adventure! Happy New Year from the entire brettapproved crew!
