I very much enjoyed my time at the Gaylord Texan Resort. Overall, the staff was helpful and knowledgeable both about the hotel and its accessible room I had requested, they even upgraded my room free of charge. The room itself was comfortable and accessible for my needs. The Gaylord has several accessible room options to fit each guest’s needs. These would include rooms with accessible roll in showers, rooms for those whom are hearing impaired and rooms like the one I stayed in with an accessible bathtub with multiple grab bars and a shower chair (see photos below).

I thought the room was well laid out and comfortable. There was enough space for me to maneuver in the room with my walker which was nice. There was even enough space for me to “park” it against a wall so it was out the way when I was not using it. The bathroom was quite larger for the size and had a wide and easy open door and plenty of space to maneuver within. There were grab bars and lower fixtures that would be accessible for wheelchair users as well; this includes a lower roll under sink as well. I liked that a shower chair was included in the bathroom and that I didn’t have to ask for one to be sent up to the room for me to use.

The other fixtures and furniture in the room were designed with accessibility in mind. These would include lower door locks and peep holes, lower clothing racks and storage areas, a lower and wheelchair friendly work desk, and easy wheelchair level access refrigerator, coffee maker, and safe. There was also enough space between beds, such that wheelchair users could roll between them. If you are interested in a room like the one pictured, ask to reserve room #3121.

The Gaylord itself was largely accessible regardless of ability, however, it is best to be prepared for a lot of walking or rolling as the facility is very large with multiple restaurants, cafes, shops and other amenities and services. Should you find it overwhelming or confusing in any way (as we did), feel free to ask the staff for assistance and they would be happy to help you. I found them very approachable and knowledgeable about the hotel and its offerings regardless of a staff persons position or job within the hotel. In my opinion, I believe this is because of the amount of training each staff member receives.

Parking options at the Gaylord include a parking garage or a valet service which we elected to use during our stay, either option will require some form of payment. If making reservations, be sure to ask about parking options as prices are subject to change. Overall, I had a nice experience at the Gaylord Texan and would recommend it as a place to stay, whether for business, pleasure, or even a staycation as was our case.
